ColorCote® Case Study 8 - re-roof project in a very severe marine climate required ColorCote® ARX™ pre-painted aluminium.
The Blue Heron Holiday Park at Tamaterau is sited on a private peninsular of land that juts into the beautiful Whangarei Harbour. Fringed by 200-year-old Pohutukawas and pockets of native bush, it is surrounded by the sea on three sides.
The Blue Heron covers more than two hectares and is one of the few remaining traditional kiwi family camp grounds in the Whangarei region.
The holiday park has three self-contained holiday houses, 11 tourist cabins, five park caravans and 27 campsites for caravans or campers (all sited on the waterfront), plus two communal kitchens, BBQ house, ablution/laundry blocks and boat ramps.
The largest of the holiday houses was formerly the owners’ residence but has been converted into a self-contained three-bedroom waterfront accommodation for local or international holiday-makers.
This home is sited in the middle of the park, barely 20-metres from the tide and very-exposed to the salt-laden marine environment. Because of this very severe marine climate the existing corrugated iron roof had had a harsh and short life and needed replacing before the main renovations could begin. All the seams where the iron sheets were lapped and along the gutter line were rusted right through, allowing water to pour through into the roof space and leak into the house.
The owners even tried using duct tape as a temporary fix to slow down some of the worst leaks.
The Blue Heron owners decided they wanted a long-term solution to their problem not a quick fix that might be cheaper up front but would need replacing again in a few years (for example, using steel roofing again).
Their solution?
The old roof was removed and recycled and replaced with a new roof manufactured from ColorCote® ARX™ pre-painted aluminium. (While the roof was removed the owners also took the opportunity to install new insulation in the ceiling).
ColorCote® ARX™ has a polyester primer and a 70% PVF2 polymer topcoat baked onto a marine-grade aluminium substrate and is specifically designed for use in severe and very severe marine environments. ColorCote® ARX™ is warranted to last for a minimum of 15 years even in very severe environments.
